FAQ
Answers to the roofing questions Roofwerks hears most.
Are you insured?
Yes. We are fully insured with General Liability, Workman's Compensation, Automobile Liability and Excess Liability specifically for roofing. Ask for an insurance certificate directly from a contractor's insurance company to make sure the right coverage is in force.
How long does a roof last?
Asphalt shingles, the most common roofing material, will likely last 25 years in our NC climate. Underlayment, flashings and ventilation are all critical to getting the most life out of your roof.
What should I expect during the reroof process?
We prepare you well ahead of the job with a checklist of household items to protect. The main thing to expect is loud noise.
What will a new roof system cost?
It varies widely with the materials, the type of home or building and the labor involved. Call us to schedule a free, no obligation inspection and estimate.
Will insurance cover the replacement of my roof?
It depends on whether your roof was damaged by an act of nature such as hail, high winds or a fallen tree. Contact your insurance company to start a claim, and beware of storm chasers who promise a free roof.
How can I tell when my roof has problems?
Look for cracked, warped or missing shingles, loose seams, deteriorated flashings and granules collecting in the gutters. Indoors, watch for cracked paint, discolored sheetrock or peeling tape.
Can I put a roof over my existing roof?
North Carolina code allows two layers of shingles, but we do not recommend it: there is no way to find existing leaks without removing the old shingles and felt.
My roof leaks. Do I need a full replacement?
Not necessarily. Leaks often come from loose flashings or one damaged section, which our repair department can fix without a total replacement.
What might cause a leak in my bathroom?
Often a failed plumbing vent flashing boot. UV rays degrade the neoprene seal, water runs down the pipe and shows up on the bathroom ceiling.
Are metal roofs expensive?
Metal costs more up front than asphalt shingles, but over its life cycle it can cost less because it lasts substantially longer.
What are the black streaks on my roof?
Algae, which is more common in humid areas. It does not affect the life of your shingles.
Why are my shingles blowing off?
Usually the roof is nearing the end of its life and the shingles have turned brittle, or they were fastened wrong, for example high-nailing.
